Race report by Maria.

Another incredible race weekend in the books. The challenging Red Eye Velo Stage Race included a technical eight-corner criterium, 6.2 mile time trial and a hot and hilly road race. The crit started off fast, the corners were tight with 16 women starters and loose gravel. In just the first lap, Antje flies off her bike and gracefully somersaults into the grass, avoiding a potentially grueling multi-rider pile up. Down but definitely not out, she jumped back into the race on the next lap and managed to get away with one other rider and finish second in the crit with over a minute on the field. Magda had an eventful experience in the crit as well, nearly sliding out herself, but stayed rubber-side down by taking the outside line. She finished 2nd in the field sprint, landing her 5th on the podium. Maria lost contact with the pack early but was able to group with other riders off the back to finish 4th out of the women’s category 4 racers.

The time trial on Sunday included a handful of rolling hills and a 180° turnaround at the bottom of the steepest hill. Antje captured 3rd place, even after taking a wrong turn (Note from Antje: That chipseal road looked really promising). Maria took 3rd place spot among the cat 4s and Magda came in 4th after Antje in the cat 1/2s.

With only one a little over an hour between the TT and the road race, the DelaFina riders took this time to switch numbers over to the right side of their jerseys and hydrate before the arduous 47-mile race. The course consisted of a half-dozen solid hills every lap which ranged from long grinding gradients to short punchy out-of-the-saddle climbs, each giving opportunity for potential breakaways. The pack stayed together for the first lap, shedding a few riders off the back. A mile into the 2nd lap, Maria’s rear derailleur cable snapped, trapping her in the 53×11 gear which made the climbs much more difficult. As the dust settled and the last rider (Maria) crossed the line, the results were announced. After some negative racing in lap 2, Antje got away with three other racers in the last half lap and put two minutes into the field. She captured the top podium spot in the road race from a sprint finish, which landed her 2nd overall in the GC. Magda finished 5th in the Women’s Cat 1/2 and Maria managed to avoid a DNF.

All smiles after the road race

DelaFina Racing is already looking forward to the next big race weekend which will take place in Pensacola the second weekend of September. Stay tuned!
